Source: Marlins Bidder Mas Considering Whether To Continue Pursuit Amid Issues

MasTec co-Founder & Chair Jorge Mas is "considering whether to continue a pursuit" of the Marlins because he and the team "haven't agreed on multiple key issues," according to a source cited by Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. The Marlins have continued to be unwilling to give Mas an "exclusive negotiating window." Mas and the Marlins also "haven't been able to agree on a price." The Marlins want at least $1.2B, and Mas "values the team under that" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/18). In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde cites a source as saying that Mas is "frustrated by a few things," one of them being the "never-ending sales process." Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria and President David Samson, by contrast, "don’t want to afford any group an exclusive window to negotiate in hopes competitive bidding will drive up the price." A source said that the public nature of the Marlins bid seems to be "taking a toll on potential investors." Some people approached to invest in groups have "expressed interest only to back out when they have seen names going public for weeks" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 7/18). In N.Y., Claire Atkinson cited a source as saying, "There is no process. The truth is, it is chaos." The source added, "(Loria) won't make a decision. Everyone is dancing and no one is committing." Atkinson notes typically, teams "use a bank to vet bids, but in this case, there is no bank or adviser." Law firm Proskauer Rose "appears to be the main point of contact for the parties" (N.Y. POST, 7/18).
