The Chiefs "stayed in house" yesterday in promoting co-Dir of Player Personnel Brett Veach to GM, according to Blair Kerkhoff of the K.C. STAR. Veach "replaces John Dorsey, who was fired last month." Veach will "report directly" to by Chiefs Chair & CEO Clark Hunt on "all player personnel matters" (K.C. STAR, 7/11). In K.C., Vahe Gregorian in a front-page piece writes the Chiefs made a "logical, smart and presumably safe move." He has been in the "mortar of their turnaround the last four years." The Chiefs' success of the last four seasons was a "tremendous argument for continuity." Hiring an in-house candidate "suggests systems, structure, staff and personnel largely will remain in place, to be tweaked and contoured to Veach’s own approach but not likely subject to the turnover." Veach is "known for his aptitude for evaluating talent and his energy -- as well as the communications skills that Dorsey evidently at times lacked." It is "understood he’s widely respected by co-workers, including support staff and scouts, which should buoy him with a certain credibility and loyalty among them." But instead of this "being a moment to move forward in, a weird haze lingers." The Chiefs "continue the 'nothing to see here' stance they’ve taken since unceremoniously dumping Dorsey last month in a classic Friday late afternoon news release" (K.C. STAR, 7/11).
SATISFYING THE ROONEY RULE? PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio wrote there is one "nagging issue about a job search that went largely unnoticed and unscrutinized." Florio: "Who did the Chiefs interview to comply with the Rooney Rule?" Chiefs VP/Communications Ted Crews said that the team "interviewed two minority candidates" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 7/10). Fritz Pollard Alliance Chair John Wooten said that he was "in contact with the Chiefs during their search and was satisfied with the process" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 7/10).
