Condi Rice, Ginni Rometty Among Heavy Hitters At KPMG Women's Leadership Summit

Former U.S. Secretary of State CONDOLEEZZA RICE shared key leadership characteristics during her keynote address at yesterday’s KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois, site of this week's KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. In a one-on-one interview with NBC Sports’ MICHELE TAFOYA, Rice spoke about the challenges of “being the only women in the room” as she recounted her roles both as Secretary of State and as Stanford Provost. “If you are the only women in the room it is because you earned it,” she said. “Increasingly, you are not going to be the only women in the room.” Rice also said that the mark of a good leader is to have the confidence to ask for help. “There is nothing wrong with admitting you need help,” she said. “It’s your job to make tough decisions.” She recounted that as people gain more power, the harder it is to tell them bad news. "Be a truth-teller to people in superior positions, “ she said. A second panel featuring Discover CEO DAVID NELMS, UBS Group Managing Dir & Client Strategy Officer PAULA POLITO and Johnson & Johnson Worldwide VP & Chief Supply Officer KATHY WENGEL talked about “C-Suite Vision.” Polito urged attendees to take chances in building a career. “I have a heavy appetite for risk,” she said. Other sessions featured author WHITNEY JOHNSON and Olympians MICHELLE KWAN, ANGELA RUGGIERO and LINDSEY VONN. Microsoft Exec VP/Business Development PEGGY JOHNSON and Verizon Exec VP & President of Global Media MARNI WALDEN spoke on “Driving Innovation Through Consumer Insights." The summit ended with a “Fireside Chat” with IBM President & CEO GINNI ROMETTY.
