Wearables Startup IMeasureU Acquired By Motion Capture Company Vicon

IMeasureU has been acquired by motion capture technology company Vicon, it was announced Tuesday.

Aukland, New Zealand-based IMeasureU includes a business line — IMU-Step — focused on the elite sports market in assisting with the rehabilitation of injured players. By attaching IMU sensors to the players, coaches and sports scientists can track strain throughout the rehab process in order minimize the time it takes to return to action.

The Philadelphia 76ers are among the basketball teams that have used IMeasureU for data-drive performance insights that come from the combination of small and lightweight wearable sensors and proprietary software. The measurement tools have been used in soccer as well.

“It has always been at the core of IMeasureU’s philosophy to strive for excellence and precision,” IMeasureU founder Mark Finch said in a statement. “This is why the team is extremely excited about joining forces with Vicon, the market leader in motion capture technology. The two companies complement each other perfectly and we are excited about combining our expertise to drive global growth and innovation.”

Vicon, a motion capture technology specialist for life science, entertainment, and engineering industries, reported that it had been tracking Inertial Measurement Unit technology for several years. The acquisition would enable IMeasureU’s IMU sensors to be integrated with and analyzed through Vicon’s existing end-user applications.

Customers could benefit from a greater variety of low-cost motion measurement applications, according to Vicon, which with a lower price point can have access to a broader marketplace. Vicon already has 1,200 sports sciences customers.
