Chiefs Likely To Stay In-House With GM Opening, But Could Lead Thorough Search

Many NFL observers expect the Chiefs to stay in-house to fill its GM vacancy by "most likely promoting" co-Dir of Player Personnel Brett Veach to succeed John Dorsey, but Chiefs Chair & CEO Clark Hunt's track record "suggests he’ll run a thorough search," according to Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY. The Chiefs are moving "quickly to line up candidates." Sources said that Seahawks co-Dir of Player Personnel Scott Fitterer is "expected to speak to the Chiefs this week," and Titans Dir of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden is "also on Kansas City's radar." The additional candidates join Veach and Chiefs Pro Personnel Scout Mike Borgonzi "among the candidates to replace Dorsey" (USA TODAY, 6/27). In K.C., Terez Paylor writes Veach is a "logical choice to interview for the position," as he "has a history with Chiefs coach Andy Reid." He was an assistant with the Eagles under Reid before he "followed" him to the Chiefs in '13 (K.C. STAR, 6/27). NFL.com's Ian Rapoport cited sources as saying that Vikings Assistant GM George Paton was a "target on the Chiefs' list," but for a "variety of reasons Paton will stay put in Minnesota." NFL.com's Nick Shook noted Paton was "also a favorite for the 49ers' GM job back in January" before the S.F. team hired John Lynch (NFL.com, 6/26).

CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio cited a source as saying that "technically, the Chiefs hadn’t directly contacted" ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick about the opening, but the team "had contacted his representation." Yet Riddick, "definitely" a candidate for the job, denied the contact in a tweet last Sunday. It "likely has something to do with what he said, or more accurately didn’t say, about the situation to ESPN." Another factor "quite likely may be the fact that ESPN’s NFL information machinery ended up being scooped by a competitor -- a dynamic that one specific reporter at ESPN is reputed to be very sensitive about, even if said reporter pretends publicly to not be." For now, Riddick is "continuing to pretend to not be a candidate for the Chiefs job, even though he is" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 6/26).
