  • Consumption, Reach Continues To Trend Down For Digital Sports Media Outlets

The digital sports media category in May continued its extended decline in consumption and reach that has marked much of ’17 so far. Monthly multiplatform comScore data showed a total sports audience reach of 174.3 million and an average content consumption of 91.8 minutes per user during the month. The reach figure is down 3% from last month and down 1% from May of last year. The latest consumption figure, meanwhile, is down 7% from April and down 23% from the same month last year. It is the second-lowest such sports consumption figure in any month since February ’15. The downward trend in digital sports media consumption follows similar declines in every month this year with the exception of March. ESPN led all sports entities for the ninth straight month and 38th time in the last 39 months. However, its total reach of 73.6 million uniques marked the lowest figure to lead the category since July ’15.

  • FS1 Lands First Bowl Game After Holiday Bowl Ends Long Association With ESPN

The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl "will be televised" by FS1 this year, ending a long run on ESPN, according to Jay Posner of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. It had been the "longest-running partner" in ESPN history, but the contract expired after the '16 game. The only available date on ESPN’s schedule "appeared to be Dec. 26, but the Holiday has not been played that early since it switched to a post-Christmas date" in '86. This year's game kicks off at 6:00pm PT on Dec. 28, and ESPN "has the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio slated at the same time the Holiday will be played." Wasserman Media Group consulted with the SDCCU Holiday Bowl "on the arrangement" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/16). The Holiday Bowl will be FS1's first bowl game (THE DAILY).

  • Audience Analysis: Belmont Hits Multiyear Low; U.S.-Mexico Qualifier Big For Univision, FS1

NBC last Saturday afternoon drew 4.92 million viewers for the race segment of the Belmont Stakes, marking the event’s lowest figure since ’10, when ABC averaged 4.74 million viewers. There were two races in that time frame that featured horses seeking the Triple Crown (’15 and ’14). This year’s race also was without the Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness winner. Last year, NBC averaged 5.83 million viewers for the race.

    A TALE OF TWO CITIES
: Cleveland-Akron continued to be the top-rated market during the NBA Finals on ABC this year, but the gap with the S.F.-Oakland-San Jose market was closer than it was in ’16 and ’15 for the first two Warriors-Cavaliers matchups. Cleveland-Akron led with a 34.7 local rating for the five-game series, down from a 38.8 for the seven-game series last year, and down from a 43.7 in ’15, which was LeBron James’ first season back with the Cavs. The 34.7 was above the 33.3 for the Bay Area this year, which was lower than the region’s 34.1 rating last year. Columbus, Ohio, has remained No. 3 for the Finals each of the past three seasons. Meanwhile, NBA TV during the Finals this year averaged 270,000 viewers for postgame coverage, marking an all-time best for the league-owned net. That figure is up 5% from last year.

: The U.S.-Mexico FIFA World Cup qualifier was a big win for both FS1 and Univision last Sunday night. Univision, with a simulcast on Univision Deportes, averaged 4.5 million viewers for the match portion of the game (no pre-game included), marking the best soccer audience on any net this year to date and best audience for any World Cup qualifier since the same matchup drew 4.6 million viewers on UniMas in March ’13. Meanwhile, FS1 drew 2.3 million viewers for its broadcast of the match, marking the net’s best soccer qualifer yet and sixth-best soccer audience all-time. The soccer match, along with a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race and NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing event, led to FS1’s third best Sunday total-day audience on record, and 15th best day overall.
