The influence of the WNBA Players Union on the league has "never been more evident," as the union has "developed a strong voice tackling social issues, gaining benefits for players while competing home and abroad, and backing equitable support measures throughout professional sports," according to Seth Berkman of the N.Y. TIMES. Sparks F and union President Nneka Ogwumike is "focused on expanding the union's impact in growing the WNBA in its 21st season and beyond." Ogwumike "encountered her first test" as union president in February, when former WNBAer Candice Wiggins said that she was "bullied during her eight-year career for being heterosexual." Ogwumike responded in a statement that the union had a "commitment to diversity and inclusion" and that players' rights "must be respected even if their opinions are not shared." Meanwhile, Ogwumike was "already focusing" on the next CBA, which will "dictate WNBA player benefits into the next decade." Berkman notes the current deal runs through '21, but there is an "opt-out clause" after '19. Increased salaries are "sure to be on the agenda." The average league salary is around $77,000, and a "majority of WNBA players spend half their year overseas" in order to "double their salary." But the setup "creates a schedule that leaves little time for rest." Growing the fan base and pushing for expansion are "also of interest to players."
