Media Notes

ESPN.com's Scott Lauber noted for the second time in six months and the fifth time overall, NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy will be "treated for lung cancer." Remy will "undergo surgery to remove a small portion of his lung in two weeks." He expects to "continue calling Red Sox games until then and is hopeful of returning to his job at some point after the All-Star break." Remy said, "If you don't go to your doctor, you don't have much chance to find out. It might be too late. Go and find out what's going on with your body" (ESPN.com, 6/12). Remy said that he got the "latest diagnosis after a routine scan two weeks ago" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/13).

SNEAK ATTACK
: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Shalini Ramachandran notes Fox has "quietly started offering a national, 24-hour feed on Hulu’s live-streaming TV service in more than 70 markets where it hasn’t come to agreements on streaming with local affiliate stations." The move represents a "drastic shift in approach, cutting out station owners and groups that own Fox affiliate stations in many markets," including Raycom Media and Sinclair Broadcast Group. Broadcast industry execs said that it "isn’t clear whether the network would have the rights to include NFL games on its streaming channel unless it has signed on the local affiliate" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/13).

PITCH PROBLEMS
: The FINANCIAL TIMES' Bond, Fildes & Ahmed noted the EPL this season "suffered the biggest drop in viewing on Sky TV for at least seven years." Average viewing on Sky's live TV channels fell 14% over the past season "even after it paid two-thirds more to show the matches." Total viewing hours also fell 6% over the course of the season for Sky (FT.com, 6/11).
