Bucking A Trend: Broncos Coaching Players On Social Media Use After Minor Snapchat Slip-Up

The Broncos have had "plenty of discussions with their players about social media and how to conduct themselves," and the team has had to "reaffirm those thoughts over the last week after a mini-media storm, especially among several of the team's former players who now work in talk radio or other local outlets," according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com. It started after Broncos S Will Parks "posted a video of two practice plays on his Snapchat account." The plays, both incompletions thrown by QB Paxton Lynch, were "framed by some as criticisms of Lynch's efforts in practice." Broncos coach Vance Joseph said, "Social media is different than what I grew up around. It's their everyday lives. Sometimes, they fall into the trap of it being a normal deal, but this is work. This is a workplace. We can't share what we're doing here to the outside world." In '12, during then-coach John Fox' second season with the team, LB D.J. Williams "posted images from his playbook on social media," which was on a team-issued iPad. Joseph: "Our players do a great job with social media, kind of showing how hard they're working and talking to our fans." But he added Parks "can't do" what he did. Joseph: "What we do here is personal and private. But, his intent was not to hurt us or his teammate." Parks said that there was "no ill will between Lynch and himself in the aftermath." But it "did bring another presentation of sorts from Joseph to the team about the dos and don'ts in the wired world" (ESPN.com, 6/12).
