Clippers, Second Spectrum To Debut New Analytics Software At Games Next Season

The Clippers and Second Spectrum have "partnered to bring a fan engagement tool using the cameras that are already in NBA arenas that can take the feed and recognize players and plays and can do analytics around it," according to Kevin Spain of USA TODAY. The software, which will "debut at Clippers games next season," will tell fans "what kind of play was run, how it was defended and can give them updates on their fantasy players." At Recode's Code Conference this week in California, Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer said, "What if when people are at home watching on television, or the internet ... what if we can actually diagram what play is going on because we can recognize it in real time? What if we can flash your fantasy points right on your player so you could see what that was worth to you?" Spain notes Ballmer "then talked about how you can add animation; if lightning came up while watching the video and a player was dunking a hammer." Fans can "scroll through a game and just watch highlights." Ballmer said that the software will be in "beta testing" for the '17-18 season and "live" for '18-19 (USA TODAY, 6/1).
