With RSN Deal Done, Root Sports Turns Focus To Carriage For Golden Knights In Las Vegas

With the Golden Knights having locked up a regional TV deal with Root Sports Rocky Mountain, AT&T, Root's parent company, will now "enter in negotiations with Cox Cable and CenturyLink, which owns Prism TV, to put the Knights on their systems" in the Vegas market, according to Steve Carp of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The team "won't be involved in negotiations." Golden Knights Owner Bill Foley said, "I can't imagine Cox not doing business with AT&T" (REVIEWJOURNAL.com, 5/23). In Las Vegas, Jesse Granger notes the Golden Knights "don’t appear to be worried" about carriage in the Vegas market yet. Golden Knights President Kerry Bubolz said of AT&T, “They will go through a process and ultimately by the time we get to October we feel like we’ll have a confident group of full distribution.” Foley said, "It’s in their best interest to have as wide of an exposure as possible. I’m very confident that the other mediums will want to have the Golden Knights." Foley said that the games will "also be streamed online as part of the deal, but couldn’t yet give details." Granger writes while it is "certainly shrewd for Foley to build fan bases elsewhere, he might want to focus on his own backyard." If the carriage situation does not change by the start of the '17-18 regular season, "more than half of Las Vegas could be in the dark" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 5/24).
