D-Backs, Royals Latest MLB Clubs To Offer Discounted Ballpark Passes Over Summer

The D-backs yesterday unveiled their “Ballpark Summer Pass” program, allowing fans to "attend every home game in June and July for $50," according to Dan Bickley of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Divided out, it would be $2 per game if a fan was able to "attend all 25 contests" over the course of the two months. It is a "great way to bring energy and people to a sterile ballpark" in Chase Field, and it is the "best idea the organization has cooked up in some time." The D-backs "aren’t the first team to introduce a value pass to sports fans," as the A's "recently debuted a similar program." Bickley noted the A’s are "also a bottom-dwelling team" in the AL West. The D-backs have a "winning team and one of the best home records" in MLB, but their ballpark vibe is "closer to [a] morgue than Mardi Gras." Fans can "buy up to four passes for $200," but tickets "can’t be shared or resold." Purchasers "must download MLB’s Ballpark app, which will assign seat locations to every game two hours in advance." As a result, every game "will be something of a surprise." The tickets "won’t be in premium locations," but fans will "have the option to upgrade their upper deck seats for an additional fee by using the same app." The D-backs have "had attendance issues for years." Through 26 home games, they have averaged 23,177 fans, "third-worst" in the NL. But the D-backs "aren’t just bemoaning the lack of turnstile enthusiasm for a team that might actually make the playoffs." Bickley: "They’re doing something about it" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 5/21).

ROYAL FLUSH: In K.C., Pete Grathoff noted the Royals are also "offering a 'Ballpark Pass'" for $99 that "allows fans access to all 30 games at Kauffman Stadium from May 29 to July 23." The tickets for the 30 games are "guaranteed for standing room only, but the Royals say a fan, once in the stadium, may upgrade their standing-room-only ticket to a seat depending on availability" (K.C. STAR, 5/21).
