Georgia Athletics Increasing Budget By $4.5M For '17-18, Aided By SEC Network Payouts

The Univ. of Georgia is "set to have a budget" of about $127M for the upcoming FY, an increase by more than $4.5M over last year, according to Seth Emerson of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. The athletics budget projection is for "both revenue and expenses" when the FY begins July 1. Essentially the department is "projecting it will spend that much -- $127,590,041 -- an increase over the approved budget last year of $123,049,705." A major source of the revenue increase "continues to be from the SEC Network payout." The SEC paid out around $40M to each school for FY '15-16, an increase from $32.7M the previous year. As for expenses, UGA Assistant AD/Business Operations Stephanie Ransom told the athletics BOD that there were "'moderate' increases in staff, as well as for recruiting and other areas related to student-athlete welfare" (AJC.com, 5/16). In Athens, Marc Weiszer noted UGA's revenue for the FY is "impacted by having only six home football games." UGA VP/Finance & Administration Ryan Nesbit said that there is also a "'slight increase,' in the multimedia contract and sponsorship in licensing" (ONLINEATHENS.com, 5/16).
