Pistons' New Primary Logo Pays Homage To "Bad Boys" Era, Downtown Detroit

The Pistons debuted their "new look" logo yesterday, which served as the "right" timing with the team moving to downtown Detroit beginning next season, according to Vince Ellis of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Palace Sports & Entertainment CMO, Exec VP & Chief Communications Officer Charlie Metzger said, "We started talking about this literally a year or so ago, but then once things started getting much more solidified with the move downtown, we knew that the time was right." The new logo is "similar to the franchise's primary logo" from '79-96, the "same artwork associated with the Bad Boys teams that won NBA titles" in '89 and '90. Modified groove lines are "featured with a font more consistent with what’s found on the players’ jerseys," while gray outside chrome is "representative of the city’s automobile heritage." The Pistons last "revamped" their logo in '05. Metzger said that the announcement is the "first of many involving the franchise’s look in the coming months" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/17). In Detroit, Rod Beard writes the Pistons' new primary logo is an "homage to their heyday with the 'Bad Boys' teams." Metzger: "We always want to honor that championship history ... but it’s also about our new chapter now." The new design "features the familiar red, white and blue color scheme, with an updated 'Detroit Pistons' font over a redesigned basketball graphic." The changes "amount to a few tweaks" (DETROIT NEWS, 5/17). In Michigan, Ansar Khan wrote the new logo reflects a "modern design." Metzger said that the marketing team, in conjunction with Nike and the NBA, "worked on the new design for six months" (MLIVE.com, 5/16). Also in Michigan, Mike Mulholland wrote the unveiling was "somewhat underwhelming after the logo was leaked thanks to the NBA store earlier this month" (MLIVE.com, 5/16).
