Red Sox Taking Proactive Approach Following Adam Jones Incident With "B Kind" Buttons

Fenway Park ushers, security staff and other team employees are "wearing buttons that say 'B Kind' and 'B Respectful'" in the wake of the recent incident involving Orioles CF Adam Jones, according to Peter Abraham of the BOSTON GLOBE. The "B" is in the "font of the team logo." The Red Sox also "put a new sign on the Green Monster that reads, 'Welcome All.'" Another new initiative is to "give fans pocket-sized cards that have instructions on four ways to alert security to request help." A scoreboard message also now "tells fans that they are subject to a lifetime ban from Fenway if they violate the team’s code of conduct" (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 5/13). The WALL STREET JOURNAL dubs the Adam Jones incident its "Crisis Of The Week." California-based consultant and crisis manager Jonathan Bernstein said, "The Red Sox' response to this incident was a fine example of crisis management best practices. A humble and thorough apology was combined with a restatement of the team's policy against such behaviors and its intent to continue to enforce them." Reputation Partners President Nick Kalm said the response was a "bases-clearing triple," and the Red Sox also "deserve praise for identifying the fan for further sanctions, but not publicly revealing his name." National Strategies Public Relations CEO Jennifer Vickery: "This isn't lip service by the Red Sox. The organization acted promptly and has a zero-tolerance policy in this matter" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/16).
