Overnight Ratings: Final Round For The Players Takes Hit With Lackluster Leaderboard

NBC yesterday drew a 2.6 overnight for the final round of The Players Championship, which saw 21-year-old Si Woo Kim win the event by three strokes over Ian Poulter and Louis Oosthuizen. That figure is down from a 3.1 overnight last year, when Jason Day took the win in a wire-to-wire effort. This year’s leaderboard had a lack of big names at the top, with World No. 1 Dustin Johnson finishing tied for 12th, Rory McIlroy tied for 35th, Day tied for 60th and Jordan Spieth missing the cut. The 2.6 rating also is down from a 3.9 overnight in ’15 for Rickie Fowler’s playoff win over Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner. The event drew a 2.6 overnight in ’14 for Martin Kaymer’s win. This marks the 14th straight week the final round of a golf event on broadcast TV has seen a decline, excluding the Zurich Classic, which had rain issues. While down from previous years, The Players still marks NBC's best figure for a non-major or non-Ryder Cup golf event since last year's event.
