League Notes

The NATIONAL POST's Scott Stinson writes under the header, "Sidney Crosby Incident Just The Latest Sign The NHL's Concussion Protocols Are A Flimsy Mess." The Penguins C's head-first collision with the boards in Game 6 against the Capitals on Monday shows how "hockey’s culture, all these years after the dangers of brain injury have become more fully realized, still errs on the side of the bare minimum that the specific rules require, to the point of ridiculousness." So while the NHL "touts its independent concussion spotters as an important advancement in player safety, it also prevents them from taking action unless in certain circumstances" (NATIONAL POST, 5/12).

DOUBLE UP: FORBES' Christian Sylt noted Liberty Media has "revealed plans to double staff numbers" at the F1 HQ from 75 to 150 in a "bid to boost revenues" of the auto racing series which it acquired for $8B in January. It could cost F1’s 10 teams as much as $6.5M as their prize money is equivalent to 63% of the profits of the series so the "greater its costs, the lower the profits and the less there is to pay to participants" (FORBES.com, 5/11).

STICK TO YOUR ROOTS: Blizzard Entertainment released a statement Thursday responding to reports surrounding its upcoming Overwatch League and "seeking to clarify rumors" that the $43B company is "ignoring franchises endemic to esports in favor of deeper-pocketed traditional sports team owners." The statement said, "The league is built upon the best elements of endemic esports programs and traditional sports, and we're in active discussions with many teams and owners from both worlds because it will take a village to stand up a league with such an unprecedented structure" (ESPN.com, 5/11).
