Derek Jeter's Number Retirement Ceremony Is Most In-Demand Ticket In MLB

Fans are "paying through the nose for tickets" to Derek Jeter's jersey retirement ceremony at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, and the average purchase price for a single ticket is "now at $199.76," according to TickPick data cited by Anthony Noto of the N.Y. BUSINESS JOURNAL. That number is "actually a drop from what the cost was originally." Earlier this week, TickPick "determined that the average purchase price was $227.47." Tickets were "3.4 times more expensive" than the next most popular Yankees number retirement -- Bernie Williams on May 24, 2015 (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/11). In Newark, Chris Ryan noted fans attending retirement ceremonies during the '15 season "paid an average of $67.26 for Williams," $59.64 for Andy Pettitte, $59.22 for Jorge Posada and $43.21 for Mariano Rivera (NJ.com, 5/11). In N.Y., Victor Mather notes Ticket IQ, which tracks secondary market sales, said the Jeter ticket "currently rates as the second-hottest game of the season, after opening day." But enthusiasm for the game "seems to be waning somewhat." The average asking price is $208, "down from $451 six weeks ago." StubHub's "best-selling regular-season game ever was Jeter’s final one at home on Sept. 25, 2014" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/12). StubHub ticket sales figures show the game is the most in-demand game of the '17 season. Total ticket sales for Jeter's jersey retirement ceremony are more than triple the total sales for David Ortiz' Red Sox retirement ceremony on June 23, the second best-selling upcoming MLB game (THE DAILY).
