Media Notes

In Lansing, Matt Mencarini in a front-page piece notes Michigan State is "suing ESPN over a public records request involving police reports relating to ongoing sexual assault investigations." MSU argues that it has been "put in an 'impossible position' because Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon's office asked the university to withhold the records and ESPN asked for them to be released." According to court documents, an ESPN reporter submitted a Freedom of Information Act request with MSU on Feb. 10 "seeking all police reports containing allegations of sexual assault" since Dec. 10, 2016, as well as "records of arrests" made between Feb. 6-9 (LANSING STATE JOURNAL, 5/3).

TUNING IN: In San Diego, Kirk Kenny notes San Diego State is "expected to decide within the next week whether it will remain with its flagship radio station or move up the dial to a new home." SDSU’s contract with BCA Radio, which owns flagship -- XEPRS-AM, "expires at the end of the current school year." SDSU games have been broadcast on XEPRS the past four years. BCA and iHeart Radio, which owns XTRA-AM, "both have had discussions" with FS College Properties, the multimedia rights holder for SDSU athletics, for the school’s broadcast rights (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/3).

FOUL BALL: THE RINGER's Alison Herman wrote it is "worth lamenting the loss" of Fox' MLB-themed drama "Pitch," which "made as forceful a case for the feel-good-but-never-cheesy broadcast drama as any show on air last season." The show's cancellation suggests that in '17, "human-sized emotions and the humans who feel them aren't quite enough to succeed on broadcast TV." Herman noted "Pitch" was "well-liked by critics" (THERINGER.com, 5/2).
