CSN Chicago Producers Believe Cubs Game 7 Documentary Is Their Best Work Yet

CSN Chicago tonight is premiering "Reign Men: The Story Behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series," and CSN Chicago Senior Producer for Original Content Ryan McGuffey believes it is the best thing he and fellow Exec Producer Sarah Lauch have ever done with the RSN. McGuffey said of the one-hour documentary airing at 9:30pm CT, "I don’t want to say this feels like it shouldn’t be on CSN, because that’s doing CSN a disservice, but this feels like something you should be able to see on HBO. We’ve evolved, and I think this proves it." McGuffey spent all of October with the Cubs, and after Game 7, he said he knew that was what he wanted to focus on. To differentiate from other outlets' documentaries, McGuffey and Lauch attempted to use first-hand accounts as the primary form of storytelling. While there is narration by noted Cubs fan and country singer Brett Eldredge, McGuffey said he wanted to “let the players do the talking” during important moments. McGuffey: “I focused on the stories being told by other outlets -- whether it was stations or actual movie companies -- and I really did make sure to watch what they were doing and how they told stories. ... I wanted to make sure we weren’t doing that, too.” The result was interviews with 14 subjects, including nine Cubs players and three members of the front office. Lauch said most interviews lasted 30-40 minutes, though some were longer. Even though only a fraction of the interviews could be used for the documentary, Lauch and McGuffey said much of what was left out will be re-purposed and used in other features the RSN regularly runs.
