Maple Leafs' Matthews In Discussions With Fanatics On Exclusive Licensing Agreement

Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews is moving "closer to cashing in off the ice," as his reps from CAA are "in discussions with online sports retailer Fanatics and others about an exclusive licensing agreement," according to Rick Westhead of TSN.ca. Fanatics is interested in distributing Matthews-signed memorabilia, including "some game-worn pieces," but it is "unclear which game-worn items Matthews might have the rights to sell." A source said that NHL teams "typically own the rights to sell game-worn jerseys," but "some prominent players negotiate with their teams for rights to game-used equipment such as sticks." Agent Pat Brisson said, "We hope to have a decision made by the summer and for next season." Westhead noted Matthews "already has an endorsement contract with Bauer Hockey." Matthews "might also appeal to companies in the banking and financial services, soft drink and energy beverage, and automotive industries" (TSN.ca, 3/8).
