Univ. Of Tennessee AD John Currie Could Earn $1.5M Retention Bonus Over Five Years

Tennessee AD John Currie can "earn a retention bonus" of $1.5M if he "remains at the university through the duration of his five-year contract," according to Rhiannon Potkey of the Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL. Currie "agreed to a five-year deal worth $900,000 in total compensation with opportunities for bonuses and a signing incentive of $75,000, due within 30 days of the execution" of the memo of understanding. In a contract that begins April 1 and runs through June 30, 2022, UT will "pay Currie a guaranteed base compensation of $300,000 per year and supplemental pay of $600,000 per year for such things as personal appearances and media obligations." Beginning July 1, Currie’s base "pay increases by $25,000 per year on July 1 of every contract year." UT is responsible for "any buyout obligation in Currie’s Kansas State contract, not to exceed $175,000." Currie "owes Kansas State $175,000" (Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL, 3/4).

MOVIN' ON UP: In Hattiesburg, Jason Munz noted Southern Miss AD Jon Gilbert "will draw an annual salary of $350,000." Gilbert was "named as Bill McGillis’ successor on Jan. 24 after McGillis accepted a similar position" at the Univ. of San Diego in December. He officially began full-time last Monday. McGillis’ annual salary "was also set at $350,000." The length of Gilbert's contract is "set at four years and expires" on Feb. 28, 2021. Gilbert can also "earn up to $60,000 if certain incentives are reached." Gilbert had previously served as Tennessee Exec Senior Associate AD since '11 (HATTIESBURG AMERICAN, 3/4).
