In N.Y., Adam Schupak notes golfer John Daly is the "main attraction" on the PGA Tour Champions. He is among a few players who "not only draw the biggest share of the gallery on the course, but whose very presence at a tournament also attracts swarms of fans through the gate." Daly’s arrival on the senior scene last May was "one of the most heralded in years. He was expected to pump life into a tour short on star power." Daly has "quickly discovered that to move the needle, he will have to do more than just show up in outlandish outfits and entertain his legion of fans." So far, his best finish in 18 starts is a share of 11th place (N.Y. TIMES, 2/21).
YOUNG MAN'S GAME: In Daytona Beach, Zach Dean lists 10 things he learned from the first weekend of Speedweeks at Daytona Int'l Speedway. The '17 NASCAR season features "another strong rookie class" with Ty Dillon, Daniel Suarez and Erik Jones, even after last season saw Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher make up "one of the better rookie classes we've seen in awhile." This year's group "may give them a run for their money" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 2/21).
CUTOFF LINE: In Buffalo, Tim Graham writes the NBA and NFL "should stop colluding and let the athletes decide when they turn pro," as an age limit to enter each league "shouldn't exist at all." But both leagues have "free-labor development systems to bolster." Age limits "allow colleges to protect their lucrative March Madness and bowl-game broadcast deals, provide leagues with scouting, force players to become free agents that much later into their primes and idiot-proof the process for the weak executives" (BUFFALO NEWS, 2/21).
