UConn Women's Hoops Win Streak Leads To Heavy Media Exposure, Including HBO Series

The UConn women's basketball team won its 100th consecutive game last night, and there may not be a women’s hoops team "who has or will have as much television time" as this squad, according to Jim Fuller of the NEW HAVEN REGISTER. SNY has been "granted behind-the-scenes access" and HBO has been "filming on a regular basis." The documentary "UConn: The March to Madness" will debut March 1 on HBO with an "hour-long show followed by 30-minute installments on subsequent Wednesdays." After last night’s 100th straight win against South Carolina, one can "only wonder if the players ever go into exposure overload." UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who gets to view HBO footage before it is aired, said, "It is a great opportunity for us to talk about UConn in general as a school and our role in what the university does, let people see what kind of kids that we have here and what we are doing. ... We try to make it so nobody feels like anybody is intruding on them and after a while, they become a part of the furniture." Fuller writes the timing "couldn’t have been better for HBO." With former players Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck being the top three picks in the '16 WNBA Draft, the "feeling was that UConn’s winning streak wouldn’t survive against the daunting non-conference schedule Auriemma put together" (NEW HAVEN REGISTER, 2/14).
