Despite a "relapse with lung cancer," NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy "expects to complete his 115-game schedule this season for the team," according to Jen McCaffrey of MASSLIVE.com. Remy is in his "fourth bout with the disease" since '08. He will have a "follow-up CAT scan on March 1 to ensure doctors have removed the entire cancerous growth." Though he is "not allowed to fly for four weeks following the surgery, he isn't scheduled to call any Red Sox games until the end of March." If his scan "comes back clean and he is cleared by his doctors, Remy expects to be able to call the four spring training games he was originally slated for in addition to the 115 regular-season games" (MASSLIVE.com, 2/13). In Boston, Dan Shaughnessy notes "depression, lung cancer, and a tragic family issue ... prompted multiple leaves for Remy in recent seasons, and NESN reduced his workload." Many Red Sox viewers "believed he was reenergized on broadcasts" during the '16 season. Remy said, "I honestly didn’t feel any different. I don’t know. I’m glad people feel that way. I didn’t see anything different than what I had been doing, it was just with a different partner" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/14). Also in Boston, Chad Finn notes Remy has "called more than 3,900 Red Sox games" since '88. NESN last month announced that he had "signed a multiyear contract extension" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/14).
LOOKING TO MOVE FORWARD: In Boston, Michael Silverman notes Remy is "looking forward to working with NESN play-by-play broadcaster Dave O'Brien." Remy believes that their "first season working together went 'really well.'" What he "wants most is to get his next clean bill of health so he can return to the booth because 'work’s a really good therapy for me'" (BOSTON HERALD, 2/14). Also in Boston, Jessica Heslam noted Remy yesterday during a media call also "delved deep into another struggle -- his depression." He said that he has "been treating it with medication since his first cancer diagnosis" (BOSTON HERALD, 2/14).
