Sources: Former Tennessee Football Coach Fulmer Emerging As Candidate For AD Position

Former Univ. of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer "has emerged as a candidate" for the school's soon-to-be-vacant AD position, according to sources cited Dan Wolken of USA TODAY. Sources said that Fulmer "has grown close" to UT President Joe DiPietro, and a "group of influential boosters have been working behind the scenes to help install him" as AD Dave Hart’s replacement when Hart departs later this summer. UT's process "has been described as murky at best and highly political, with multiple search firms involved at various points." The chaos has "provided an opening for Fulmer to return to the school and restore order" (USATODAY.com, 1/16). Fulmer yesterday "would not address specifically" the UT AD job, but he also "wouldn't rule out that he could be a candidate." ESPN.com's Chad Low noted Hart is under contract until June but is "expected to step down" before then. Other names "most commonly mentioned" in connection with the UT AD job are Univ. of Tennessee-Chattanooga AD David Blackburn, who previously worked in athletics in several capacities at UT, and current UT Exec Senior Associate AD Jon Gilbert (ESPN.com, 1/16).
