You Had Me At Hello: Sony, NFL Team Up To Promote 20th Anniversary Of "Jerry Maguire"

To promote a newly-released 20th anniversary Blu-Ray edition of  "Jerry Maguire," Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and the NFL "teamed up to release two parody mockumentaries" about the fictional football careers of Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character, WR Rod Tidwell, and Frank Cushman, the QB played by Jerry O'Connell, according to Christine Birkner of ADWEEK. The videos "feature appearances from the movie's stars," including Jay Mohr as agent Bob Sugar; a grown-up Jonathan Lipnicki as Jerry's stepson, Ray; and Aries Spears, who played Tidwell's brother, Tee Pee. Tom Cruise and Gooding Jr. are shown only in "movie clips and photos." However, it does involve "various '90s celebs," including Shaquille O'Neal, Coolio, Vanilla Ice and Salt-N-Pepa, as well as former NFLers Kurt Warner and Terrell Owens, who "wax nostalgic about Tidwell's football prowess and popularity with the celebrity set." Sony Pictures Exec VP/Marketing Lexine Wong said that the videos are "designed to remind fans of the movie's enduring appeal." The film's director Cameron Crowe even "weighed in on the project, providing the NFL and Sony with notes on the content." NFL Net Coordinating Producer Dan Dieffenbach said, "It gave us an opportunity to tell a great story. It's couched in our world, the NFL, but it crosses over into pop culture" (ADWEEK.com, 1/4).
