Sources: Wichita State Emerging As Potential Basketball-Only Addition To AAC

Wichita State has "emerged as a potential basketball-only addition" to the AAC, but "obstacles are still standing in the way of a potential marriage," according to sources cited by Jon Rothstein of FANRAG SPORTS. Sources said that WSU was "brought up as a potential basketball-only member at the latest league meetings." The addition of WSU "wouldn’t guarantee much financial benefit to the other programs" in the AAC if it was added to the league, but the "impact it would have from a basketball perspective would be immense." A source said that if WSU were to be added to the AAC it "would likely not be for next season," but potentially for '18-19 (FANRAGSPORTS.com, 12/15). WSU AD Darron Boatright said the school has "nothing to add" to Rothstein's report. Boatright: "We continue to evaluate conference affiliation as we have for the last year." In Wichita, Paul Suellentrop notes AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco "declined to comment." Aresco is on the record "at least twice in the past year as saying expansion is not a prominent topic for the conference." The article also "does not address WSU’s other sports, which would presumably also need a new home if men’s basketball were to leave the Missouri Valley Conference" (WICHITA EAGLE, 12/16).
