A's Ballpark Talks Could Pick Up With Team's Revenue Sharing Cut As Part Of New CBA

The A’s portion of MLB’s revenue sharing "will be phased out over the course of four years" thanks to the new CBA between players and owners, and a "residual benefit of that" could be a new ballpark, according to John Hickey of the EAST BAY TIMES. The A's "take from revenue sharing" was almost $35M, "so it’s a serious blow." Both players and owners "weren’t happy with the way the A’s, a large market team thanks to being able to draw fans from throughout the Bay Area, weren’t more competitive." The A’s "knew something like this might be coming, hence the renewed vigor" with which A's co-Owner John Fisher is weighing the club’s potential ballpark options. He brought in new team President Dave Kaval, whose "primary goal is to get the A’s in a new facility." A source said, "That’s the reason they brought Dave in. The A’s needed to show MLB they were serious about getting going on a new stadium." Sources suggested that the A’s "might have gotten a quicker fall from the grace of the revenue sharing system had they not made a renewed commitment to finding a new home" (EAST BAY TIMES, 12/1). CSNBAYAREA.com's Joe Stiglich noted other questions "loom about the A’s payroll in light of the lost revenues." Stiglich: "Will it slice into what they’re willing to spend this season?" There is also the "possibility that Fisher goes the other way and, with the loss of revenue sharing, ultimately decides to start spending more on payroll in order to boost fan interest, perhaps fill the seats more" at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, "generate more revenue that way and try to create some momentum going into a new ballpark" (CSNBAYAREA.com, 11/30).
