Padres Fail To Move The Needle With Unveiling Of New Uniforms For '17 MLB Season

The Padres on Tuesday unveiled a new set of uniforms for the '17 season, but the "early reception was vociferous and, for a franchise that has struggled to form an identity, largely negative," according to Dennis Lin of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The color yellow has been "removed from the Padres' home set, resulting in a more classic but blander navy blue-and-white design." The interlocking "SD" was removed from the front of the jersey and "replaced by a 'Padres' wordmark across the chest." The “San Diego” located on the front of the gray road jersey "now features a similar wordmark," while the blue alternate road jersey "remains unchanged." An "SD" patch has been "added to the left sleeve of the home, primary road and Friday brown-and-yellow jerseys." That patch currently is "on the right sleeve of the Padres’ Sunday camouflage jerseys." While the “SD” patch is "intended to provide consistency, the organization’s overall choices puzzled a large swath of fans and observers" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/23). YAHOO SPORTS' Chris Cwik wrote if he had to pick three words to describe the jerseys, he "would go with lame, generic and forgettable." Cwik: "There's nothing special here" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 11/22).

TWITTER UNIMPRESSED: MLB reporter Justin McGuire wrote on Twitter, "The Padres' quest for the most boring uniforms in sports is complete! Good job." ESPN's Darren Rovell: "If the Padres were aiming for no buzz with their new uniforms, they sure nailed it." UNC Charlotte professor and Padres fan Greg Weeks: "My non-baseball fan wife wonders why the Padres feel like they have to look like a bad version of the Dodgers."
