Vinik Says Lightning Breaking Even Financially, Happy With Where Club Is Business-Wise

Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik said team officials are "very happy with where we’re at right now" from a business standpoint. Appearing Monday on Bloomberg TV, Vinik said he wanted the team to become "world class" when he bought the franchise in '10. He noted there were "three main objectives" he was looking to achieve. Vinik: "One was to be one of the best teams in hockey year-in and year-out, and we’re achieving that. Two was to have a big impact on the community, inspire others and be good leaders in the community. We think we’re doing a good job with that. Three was to roughly break even financially, and we’re doing that." Vinik soon after taking over the team hired Tod Leiweke as CEO -- he left the team last year for the NFL -- while Steve Yzerman was brought in as VP & GM. Vinik said, "With those guys there, I didn’t meddle in their business. I just brought in two people who are some of the best in the business in sports. (I) let them do their craft, held them accountable and gave them resources, but I didn’t meddle too much. That's part of the formula here for having success” (“What’d You Miss?,” Bloomberg TV, 11/21).
