Brewers' Miller Park Becomes Latest MLB Venue To Have Ban On Smokeless Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco will be "banned at Miller Park and other sporting venues in Milwaukee," according to Mary Spicuzza of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Milwaukee Common Council members "voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco products by anyone, including on playing fields, team benches, spectator seating areas, parking lots and tailgating areas." Alderman Michael Murphy "praised sponsors and supporters of the legislation," including the Brewers, MLB and Commissioner Emeritus Bud Selig, a Milwaukee resident (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 11/23). In Milwaukee, Rich Kirchen noted the new law passed by a 14-1 vote and "carries a fine of up to $250 for violations." The MLBPA "declined to comment." MLBPA Dir of Communications Greg Bouris said that the union "provides education on the dangers of smokeless products and oral examinations" during Spring Training. The union also "developed a program for players who want to quit" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 11/22). In San Jose, John Hickey notes the tobacco-free movement in MLB is "getting bigger." While S.F. is aboard, "Oakland isn't, at least not quite yet." A statewide law in California will take effect before the '17 season that "will encompass all five of the state's MLB teams" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 11/23).
