Wyoming Approves Alcohol Sales At Football, Basketball Games; Boise State Not There Yet

The Univ. of Wyoming will "begin selling beer and wine" at football and basketball games during the '17-18 season, according to a front-page piece by Sara Klamann of the CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE. The school's BOT on Thursday night approved the plan the UW athletic department "had been working on ... for about nine months." UW AD Tim Burman said, "The largest driving factor for us ... in alcohol sales is fan experience." Burman added that estimates state UW "will generate $290,000 in revenue from alcohol sales." Klamann notes the school will "begin looking for vendors, likely settling on between three and five, in the coming months." There will be "tight limits" on alcohol sales, as they will "stop at the end of the third quarter in football games ... and midway through the second half" at basketball games (CASPER STAR-TRIBUNE, 11/18).

BOISE STATE HOLDING OUT FOR NOW: In Boise, Dave Southorn reported Boise State could "eventually serve alcohol during football games at Albertsons Stadium," but it will not "happen any time soon." BSU AD Curt Apsey said, "For now, no, I don’t see that as a possibility here. If it was something we wanted to consider, we’d have to sit down with the appropriate people, obviously. It has not been discussed on our campus, nor with our State Board. It’s a sensitive issue here in Boise, and we need to respect that.” Southorn notes BSU allows alcohol "only in the Stueckle Sky Center to premium ticket holders." BSU "experimented with 'The Huddle' last season, providing pre-game beer and wine sales" to all ticket holders 21-and-older at the Caven-Williams Indoor Complex. The Idaho State Board of Education "voted in June to end the event after one year." Apsey said that the school will "look into the possibility of bringing it back." Apsey: "There’s an upside in revenue that I think can help our program, but there are a lot of people that need to be comfortable with that" (IDAHO STATESMAN, 11/17).
