Commission Votes To Fund Proposed Raiders Stadium In Vegas With Hotel Tax Increases

Clark County (Nev.) commissioners yesterday voted for a "pair of hotel room tax increases and officially enacted financing for a 65,000-seat stadium and upgrade of the Las Vegas Convention Center" for a potential Raiders move to Las Vegas, according to Michael Davidson of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. Both tax hikes were "approved in a single 6-to-1 vote." The hotel tax increases "mean an additional $1.35 for every $100 on a room rate" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/16). Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Monday said that he "wants to take a wait-and-see approach before deciding whether to fast-track" at least $899M in freeway improvements to "support construction" of a new stadium in Vegas. Sandoval during a DOT meeting said, "I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, given there’s still a process on the stadium with regard to the NFL. I’m hopeful that we’ll know one way or the other in January. So, I don’t want to spend a bunch of money in anticipation of that. We don’t know, as we sit here, what’s going to happen” (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/15).

ROLL THE DICE: Nevada Gaming Commission Chair Tony Alamo said that Raiders games "aren’t likely to come off the state’s betting boards if the NFL franchise moves from Oakland to Las Vegas -- even if the league asks for a wagering prohibition on the team." In Las Vegas, Richard Velotta notes if the Raiders move there, the team or the NFL "could request to have games removed from wagering in the state’s sportsbooks." Alamo: "I have total comfort in allowing sports betting on any teams whether they are here in Nevada -- in Las Vegas, Reno or otherwise -- or in other locations" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/16).

CHECKING IN: In San Diego, Kevin Acee notes Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chargers Special Advisor Fred Maas met yesterday in "what was described as an opportunity to 'touch base' after the Nov. 8 defeat of the team’s stadium plan." Faulconer's Deputy Chief of Staff & Chief of Communications Matt Awbrey said the meeting was "about keeping the lines of dialogue open" between the city and team (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/16).
