NFL Making First Big VR Push With New YouTube Series Debuting On Thanksgiving

NFL Films will produce a nine-episode virtual reality series that will debut on Thanksgiving via YouTube, marking the league’s first big push into VR. The series, which does not have a working title, will be made up of 10-minute episodes. The series can be viewed in a panoramic format on YouTube. It eventually also could be viewed in full VR mode. “VR is still in its early days,” said NFL Senior VP/Media Strategy & Business Development Vishal Shah. "We think VR will have large market adoption, and we want to make sure that we stay ahead of it.” NFL Films will use Google’s 360-degree camera called Jump to film the episodes, the first of which will follow the Eagles’ defensive line for a week. Future episodes will focus on the Dolphins' cheerleaders, the Packers' football culture and the Chargers' organization. Future episodes will be available on the NFL’s VR app, which is designed for Google’s mobile VR offering, called Daydream. The NFL launched an official YouTube channel in '15. It carries game previews, in-game highlights and post-game recaps. “This is another example of how we work with Google on new technologies and services,” Shah said.
