Mets P Jeurys Familia was arrested on a domestic violence charge on Monday, and he "likely is to be suspended even if the charges against him are dropped," according to Matt Ehalt of the Bergen RECORD. MLB has been "strict when dealing with those who have violated" its domestic violence policy. There is "no set penalty for offenders," but MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred can "levy a suspension that he sees fit after the investigation." Three players -- LF Hector Olivera, P Aroldis Chapman and SS Jose Reyes -- were all suspended for violating the policy this past season. Familia’s reputation had been "sterling before these allegations, and will take a hit, and the Mets will be questioned about their stance on domestic violence if they employ two violators of MLB’s policy." The Mets "made the controversial decision to sign Reyes" mid-season after the Rockies released him (Bergen RECORD, 11/2). In N.Y., James Wagner notes during this past season, Familia was part of a “Not a Fan” campaign by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which "featured local professional athletes speaking out about the issue." He was featured in a 30-second ad, which played before Mets games, and said in Spanish: “I’m a fan of baseball. I’m a fan of the Mets. I’m not a fan of domestic violence" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/2).
A TIME FOR ACTION: In N.Y., Kristie Ackert notes Mets GM Sandy Alderson "talked extensively about the responsibility the Mets had" when they signed Reyes, as he was "coming off, at the time, the longest suspension under MLB and the union’s joint domestic violence policy." Now the Mets "have a chance to prove that wasn’t just talk, but don’t hold your breath." A Mets spokesperson said of Familia's arrest, "The matter was brought to our attention and we are monitoring the situation." Ackert: "That statement does not exactly scream of the Mets preparing to take a strong stand against domestic violence" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/2).
