Pack It Up: Braves' Move To New SunTrust Park Well Under Way; 60% Of Seats Installed

The Braves' move from Turner Field in Atlanta to SunTrust Park in Cobb County is under way, with some of the team's equipment and other items "already being delivered" to the new ballpark, according to Ricky Leroux of the MARIETTA DAILY JOURNAL. Braves Exec VP/Business Operations Mike Plant said that the team "began moving things out of Turner Field on Oct. 3, the day after" their final game there. Some of the team's items will be "stored in a warehouse for a few months." The first game scheduled at SunTrust Park is an exhibition against the Yankees on March 31, but Plant said that there "will be several events at the ballpark and adjacent mixed-use development before that matchup." Plant said that more than 60% of the ballpark's 41,000 seats "have already been installed." Premium seats "will be installed in the spring." Plant: "They're not hardback seats. They have cushions to them, and cushions require covers. There's just no sense in having them sit out there all through the winter." Plant said that the ballpark's main data room is "complete, which includes the servers and other technology that the ballpark's Wi-Fi, television, telephone and security systems will run through." In the mixed-use development known as The Battery Atlanta, construction crews are also "focusing on interiors in several of the buildings." Plant said that the five-story retail and residential building on the north side of the site is "structurally complete." Interior work "has also started in the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre." Plant said that the Roxy Theatre will be "turned over to Live Nation, which will operate the venue and book its shows, in January." Plant added that many of the restaurant spaces throughout the Battery "have either already been handed over over to their operators or will be handed over soon" (MARIETTA DAILY JOURNAL, 10/30).
