Yankee Stadium Renovations Include Social Areas In Attempt To Draw Younger Crowd

Yankee Stadium will “undergo its first series of major design enhancements since the ballpark opened” in ‘09, adding "seven new social gathering spaces as well as additional food and beverage areas,” according to Mark Feinsand of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Construction will “begin this week with the anticipated debut coming" before next season. Among the enhancements will be the Sunrun Kids Clubhouse, the “first-ever children's zone at the ballpark.” Shaped like a mini-baseball field with a "soft, artificial surface, the 2,850-square-foot area will be located on the 300 level in right field, outfitted with oversized baseballs, bases and baseball cards." The team is also “adding a MasterCard Batter's Eye Deck located on the 200 level in center field, Bullpen Landings on the 100 level in left and right field, an AT&T Sports Lounge featuring DirecTV service in Section 134 and Budweiser Party Decks in Sections 311 and 328 featuring shaded stand-alone bar areas.” As a result of the enhancements, the Yankees are “removing just under 2,100 seats" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/25). In N.Y., George King III notes the upgrades cost in the neighborhood of $20M -- “all funded by the Yankees.” The team “plans to sell more than 200,000 additional tickets” for the ‘17 season at $15 or less that will “allow buyers access to the new areas.” Yankees COO Lonn Trost said that the landings “will be accessible to all stadium customers.” He added, “The fans wanted landings and meeting locations” (N.Y. POST, 10/25). Also in N.Y., Billy Witz notes the renovations are part of an effort to “stem plummeting attendance” and draw younger fans who have "increasingly abandoned the team in recent years.” Annual attendance at Yankee Stadium has “dropped by more than 700,000” since ’10 (N.Y. TIMES, 10/25).
