USOC Shows Diversity Hiring Stats For Itself, Member Governing Bodies For First Time

The USOC published employee diversity stats for itself and every subsidiary sports NGB on Thursday for the first time, listing exactly how many racial minorities, women, people with disabilities and veterans are employed in each organization. The initial tranche of data covers '13-15, and it will continue to be updated, said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun during a speech to the annual USOC Assembly in Colorado Springs. “We know this can be uncomfortable,” Blackmun said. “We know that many of you have tried diligently and in good faith to attract and retain minority candidates to your boards and your staff. But the theory behind this is simple: If we measure it, shine a light on it, we’re going to get better, because nobody likes to get embarrassed." Along with raw numbers, the publications show how each body performs relative to benchmarks set by census, NCAA and sport-specific data. For instance, women’s teams are expected to have a higher percentage of women’s coaches. The USOC already collects the data annually for reports to the federal government under the '78 Amateur Sports Act. The data is presented in downloadable PDF scorecards, not spreadsheets, making comparisons between NGBs and broad trend analysis cumbersome.
