NBA Releasing New Documentary In Virtual Reality Around '16 Finals

The NBA is extending its ongoing interest in virtual reality with the development of a new documentary in the enhanced format devoted to the ’16 Cavaliers-Warriors Finals. "Follow My Lead: The Story of the 2016 NBA Finals” represents a collaboration between the league, Facebook-owned VR outfit Oculus and N.Y.-based production company M ss ng P eces. The film will be available for free download today at Oculus’ store for Gear VR, and also is being presented for public demonstration at the NBA Store in N.Y. The initiative seeks to blend the traditional form of sports documentary storytelling with the immersiveness and 360-degree perspective of the VR format. It features a variety of exclusive access including inside each team’s locker rooms, as well as on the court at Quicken Loans Arena and Oracle Center. “We feel like we’re really pushing some boundaries here,” said NBA VP/Global Media Distribution Jeff Marsilio. "Nobody has told a story like this in VR. How great the Finals were would have certainly made for a compelling film regardless. But what VR provides and that feeling of being truly there takes it a whole other place.” Actor Michael B. Jordan narrates the film.
