Broncos' Marshall Stands By Anthem Protest Despite Loss Of Endorsement Deal

Colorado Springs-based Air Academy Federal Credit Union has "terminated its 5-month-old relationship" with Broncos LB Brandon Marshall after he kneeled down during the playing of the National Anthem prior to Thursday's game against the Panthers, according to Arnie Stapleton of the AP. AAFCU President & CEO Glenn Strebe in a Facebook post on Friday wrote the company is a "membership-based organization who has proudly served the military community for over 60 years." Strebe: "While we respect Brandon's right of expression, his actions are not a representation of our organization and membership." Stapleton noted Marshall "doesn't regret his actions." He said, "Absolutely, they're worth the consequences. I lost an endorsement. It's OK, though, I figured that some type of repercussion would happen" (AP, 9/9). USA TODAY's Lorenzo Reyes noted AAFCU last week "publicized a 'win a suite night' with Marshall" (USATODAY.com, 9/9).

SOUND THE ALARM: In Denver, Mark Kiszla wrote if Marshall "does nothing more than continue his silent protest, I fear his message will be drowned out by the deep-seeded enmity of people who regard his act as treason." Anybody "with guts can take a knee," but building bridges "requires real sweat equity." Kiszla: "I say this with love, Brandon Marshall: Stand up, brother. And we will stand with you" (DENVER POST, 9/11).
