NFL Marketing Notes: Kia Starts New Ad Campaign Featuring Bo, Boz
AD AGE's E.J. Schultz noted Kia in its latest campaign for its Sorento SUV is reliving Bo Jackson's "classic touchdown run" on "MNF" in which he ran over Brian Bosworth. The campaign, via David&Goliath, L.A.,"mixes live action with a recreation" of the classic video game "Tecmo Bowl." A 30-second spot "called 'Tecmo Bros' recreates the famous Bosworth-Jackson matchup." Jackson is shown driving a Sorento, but instead of plowing over Bosworth, he "picks him up for a ride." Another spot shows Jackson "driving a Sorento 100 yards for a touchdown." The campaign will debut during NBC's broadcast of the Patriots-Cardinals "SNF" game this weekend. Kia is "entering its third year as presenting sponsor of the pre-kick and kickoff shows" that air immediately before "SNF" (ADAGE.com, 9/8).
GET YOUR PJS READY: Marriott announced its Courtyard's Super Bowl Sleepover Contest as a chance to win an ultimate sleepover experience at NRG Stadium the night before Super LI. Courtyard will transform a suite into a Courtyard guest room that overlooks the field. The promo runs through Nov. 4 and will be supported by Packers LB Clay Matthews (Marriott).
KENTUCKY FRIED FOOTBALL: AD AGE's Jessica Wohl noted comedian Rob Riggle is "the latest face of KFC," as four new TV ads feature a "football focus." KFC is not an official NFL sponsor, so the QSR had to "come up with a mock professional team known as the Kentucky Buckets, complete with KFC bucket-style helmets, jerseys reminiscent of the colonel's suit and tie and socks in its signature red and white stripe" (ADAGE.com, 9/7).
