Clear Skies Ahead: NHL's Bill Daly Upbeat About Current Labor Situation With Union

The current NHL CBA is not set to expire until after the end of the '21-22 season, and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said there is not "anything major that would need fixing" from the league's perspective. Appearing on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio's "Stellick & Simmer in the Morning" show yesterday, Daly said, "There’s a general satisfaction with how the system is working. From time to time, tweaks are needed. I think the sign of any healthy collective bargaining relationship is, particularly when you’re talking about tweaks, you try to deal with them mid-term and try to make adjustments. I think we’ve been successful with the players’ association, at least during the first four years of this agreement, of being able to do that." Daly added, "It’s early, but I don’t see any stormy clouds on the horizon just yet” (“Stellick & Simmer in the Morning,” SiriusXM, 9/6). NBCSPORTS.com's Jason Brough noted while the CBA does not expire until '22, both the league and the NHLPA "have the right to opt out" after the '19-20 season. Despite the optimism that Daly spoke about, there is "reason to wonder if the players' association is quite as happy with the current system -- specifically with regards to escrow." However, there is "still time for that situation to work itself out." Escrow will not be a concern unless "league revenues fall short of projections, which they did in 2015-16 due to the dramatic decline of the Canadian dollar" (NBCSPORTS.com, 9/6).
