EMC To Take Over Title Sponsorship Of PGA Tour Event At TPC Boston

Massachusetts-based EMC next year will "assume title sponsorship" of what is now the PGA Tour Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, but a new name for the tournament will be "announced at a later date, following the merger" of EMC and Dell next week, according to Emily McCarthy of the BOSTON GLOBE. EMC has been a local presenting sponsor and one of the founding partners of the event since it began in '03. EMC Senior VP/Global Business Operations Anne Ristau said, "Obviously we're committed to it, given that it's right in our backyard. It's such a great event in New England and this brings a ton of excitement. And I think it just actually dovetailed nicely with an exciting time in our business, which next week will become Dell Technologies. It's just really great to see the new company continue to invest in New England." The tournament has "been the second of four FedEx Cup playoffs since the FedEx Cup's inception" in '07. (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/2). The AP noted until EMC "stepped in, there was discussion about having only three playoff events" (AP, 9/1). Dell currently sponsors the WGC/PGA Tour match play event in Austin (THE DAILY).

TAKING IN THE SITES: In Boston, Mark Shanahan notes Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson and the other members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team on Thursday "paid a visit to Gillette Stadium, where they chatted" with Patriots Owner Robert Kraft and "played a little game of closest-to-the-pin -- with the pin placed at the 50-yard line" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/2). The GLOBE's McCarthy notes the group, which also included Zach Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Jordan Spieth, and Jimmy Walker, "tried on Super Bowl rings and saw the Patriots' four Vince Lombardi trophies." Reed said, "Mr. Kraft was awesome. Just to hang out with somebody like that, you don't really know what to expect." The golfers also met '80 U.S. Olympic hockey captain Mike Eruzione, who "spoke to them about the 'Miracle on Ice'" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/2).
