Madison Keys Scraps Tattoo Sponsor Logo For Fitness Company After Blowback From USTA

Orangetheory Fitness recently signed a deal with tennis player Madison Keys, and after she sported its logo on her left arm on Saturday for Kids Day at the U.S. Open, Keys "decided not to walk out with it" last night for her first-round match, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. Keys wears a "sleeveless top and has a deal with Nike that doesn't allow her to put a logo anywhere else." So her agent Max Eisenbud's "solution was to offer the company a temporary tattoo on Keys' skin," which the USTA "quickly vetoed." Eisenbud said that Nike officials have "indicated to him they wouldn't object to Keys wearing another logo on her skin." Eisenbud: "It's crazy. These Grand Slams are making insane money, only sharing about 10 percent of revenue with these independent contractors." Eisenbud added that although he "backed down to the USTA for this year, he isn't giving up the fight" (ESPN.com, 8/29). ESPN's Mike Golic said of the USTA's veto, "That's okay. We'll keep showing it on our show and my Twitter feed to get that out there" ("Mike & Mike," ESPN Radio, 8/30).
