Medal Stand: U.S. Basketball Teams Continue To Take Care Of Business

Each day during the Olympics, THE DAILY offers our take on the business performances of some of the people, sponsors, broadcasters and other entities around Rio.

GOLD: USA BASKETBALL -- The men’s team no doubt faces its toughest challenge Friday in the semifinals against Spain, while the women’s team took care of business Thursday night against France to move into Saturday’s Gold Medal game. Combined, USA Basketball is 13-0 in Rio. That’s a testament to a lot of people, topped by USAB Chair Jerry Colangelo, CEO & Exec Dir Jim Tooley and coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Geno Auriemma.

SILVER: PROCTER & GAMBLE -- Nice choice by the IOC TOP sponsor in signing 16-year-old gymnast Laurie Hernandez, the first Latina member of the U.S. gymnastics team since '84, to her first endorsement contract. Hernandez, who won Gold and Silver for Team USA and is represented by agent Sheryl Shade, will become a brand ambassador for Crest toothpaste and Orgullosa, a Latina-focused online platform founded by P&G.

BRONZE: IAAF -- The international body for track and field did the right thing by giving the American women’s 4x100M relay team a second shot after one of the U.S. exchanges was interfered with by a team in another lane during qualifying. It was an odd decision to have them do the equivalent of a time trial by themselves, but at least the decision was fair.

TIN: PAT HICKEY -- We’re a little late to the table on this one -- blame Ryan Lochte on that -- but the Ireland Olympic Council President certainly deserves our attention. Hickey was arrested in Rio this week in connection with a ticket-selling probe, and the IOC Exec Board member did himself and his country proud by even trying to elude police when they came to his hotel room.
