Police Have More Questions For Swimmers, But No One Detained By Authorities

Rio police have "further questions" for the four U.S. swimmers who were allegedly victims of an armed robbery, but "no athletes had been detained," according to Christine Brennan of USA TODAY. USOC Chief External Affairs Officer Patrick Sandusky this morning said, "It is a matter for our consulate and U.S. citizen services and we will continue to cooperate with all involved." Brennan reports police "went to the athletes' village to speak with" Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, but they "were not there." Jeff Ostrow, Lochte's attorney, said that his client "has returned home" to the U.S. Lochte yesterday said that he "initially did not tell the USOC that he and the three other swimmers were victims of a robbery early Sunday morning 'because we were afraid we'd get in trouble.'" Ostrow said that Lochte "cooperated fully with authorities and gave a statement to representatives of the State Department, FBI, Tourist Police and the USOC's security team" on Sunday night (USATODAY.com, 8/17). The AP's Savarese & Harris note police investigating the incident "have found no evidence supporting the account, and say the swimmers were unable to provide key details in police interviews." But Ostrow stressed that the incident "happened the way [Lochte] described it" (AP, 8/17). The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Patricia Kowsmann notes Feigen's statement to the police said that there was only one robber, while Lochte "told police that there was more than one" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/17).
