Medal Stand: USA Gymnastics Steals The Show With A Record-Setting Performance

Each day during the Olympics, THE DAILY offers our take on the business performances of some of the people, sponsors, broadcasters and other entities around Rio.

GOLD: USA GYMNASTICS -- Behind the strength of Simone Biles and grace of Gabby Douglas, the U.S. women took the team competition for the second straight Games. The star power anchoring the current women’s team is as strong as it has ever been, which is a credit to the overall governing body.

SILVER: HERSHEY CO. -- It has been out for a while, but it was fantastic marketing by Hershey to change its chocolate bar wrapping from the classic silver lettering to red, white and blue, the first such switch in 122 years, to activate the candy maker’s new USOC sponsorship.

BRONZE: LA 2024 -- Bid committee executives faced some very politically challenging questions during their Rio press conference on Tuesday. For the most part, they handled them well, but the terrain is only going to get trickier between now and the ’24 host city vote next September.

TIN: GREEN WATER -- We expected this kind of thing in the open-water events, but the Olympic diving pool turning green? Who forgot to put in the chlorine? Maybe Rio 2016 needs a lifeguard exchange so it can balance pH levels in a swimming pool. Pretty much any teenage lifeguard can handle that, but apparently the organizers of the greatest sporting event on the planet cannot.
