District Services: AFL Washington Valor's Logo Pays Tribute To DC Flag

Monumental Sports & Entertainment on Thursday revealed Washington Valor as the name of DC's new AFL team, set to begin play in '17, according to Jake Russell of the WASHINGTON POST. The team's colors will be "red, white, blue and silver." One of the "central themes of the primary logo was to pay homage" to the DC flag, and the franchise "did that by adding two red stripes and one white stripe on the left side of a bold 'V' with three stars on the top right tip of the 'V.'" A profile of a white bald eagle head is "incorporated below the three stars." The team partnered with Mississippi-based Rare Design Owner Rodney Richardson to "create the Valor insignia after going through a list of about 100 possible team names" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 7/14). In DC, Mark Eisenhauer noted the logo "uses a similar red-white-and-blue color scheme to Monumental Sports' three other professional sports teams: the Mystics, Wizards and Capitals" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 7/15).
