North Carolina's Controversial HB2 Law Causing Scheduling Issues For Duke Basketball

Duke basketball released its non-conference schedule yesterday, but it "isn't completely set because of North Carolina's House Bill 2," according to Laura Keeley of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Duke was originally scheduled to host Albany on Nov. 12 as part of a Basketball HOF Tip-Off tourney, but because of a New York state "ban on nonessential publicly funded travel to North Carolina, Albany will not be coming." Duke's non-conference schedule yesterday also included a Nov. 12 home game against Marist, a private school in New York that "would not be subject to the state travel ban." But an hour later, Duke "issued a corrected schedule that listed the Nov. 12 game opponent as TBA." HOF VP/Basketball Operations Greg Procino said, “The Hall of Fame is currently working with the other schools involved in the tournament to reschedule the campus round games, so that each school has the two guaranteed home games that they are contracted to have in the November event. The tournament schedule had been in place for about a year, so this was an unexpected turn of events” (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 7/14). In Syracuse, Mike Waters notes in addition to Albany's game at Duke, the school's field hockey team "will not play games at North Carolina and Duke that had been previously scheduled." The Syracuse men's basketball team has road games against UNC and NC State during the '16-17 season. As a private institution, Syracuse "is not subject" to the travel ban (Syracuse POST-STANDARD, 7/14).
